The problem with the science of reading is not (as you write) that it's not new. The problem is that some people act as though "The short-hand for “the science of reading” is phonics." A bunch of people who advocate for phonics instruction have been warning for the last few years that the emphasis on phonics can be overdone, and that other components of literacy instruction are essential : Natalie Wexler, Mark Seidenberg, the Knowledge Matters folks, Maryanne Wolf, Tim Shanahan et al. Hanford herself talks about the different problems posed by decoding and comprehension here: https://www.apmreports.org/episode/2020/08/06/what-the-words-say.

So, it's a great point you're making, but it's an odd construction on things to write as though you're the only one saying it.

But a podcast told me schools had never tried the science of reading before! It must be true!
